The moment you knew you could

Cold and flu season has started early it seems in Ottawa as I've been run under by a cold this weekend. Completely scuttled all my training for the weekend unfortunately but on the plus side I'm sore all over from my workouts from the week so at least I made some gains. That or this cold has me hurting more than I know.

Anyway enough about colds and sickness, let's stay positive. Earlier this year I set the goal of running an 18min 5K which is generally about a 45 sec faster avg mile than I do on my best day. However, as I was finishing up my spin class in the gym (yes, I'm still stuck doing spin classes inside of working out on my PowerBeam Pro from Cycleops because I'm still saving to buy the necessary replacement parts and IPad ANT key) I thought one way to work my way down to the 18 min 5K was after my bike workouts to start running on the treadmill at that pace. I thought if I start out just doing a half mile and then each month add half a mile more, by my first race in May, I should be there.

These short speed works are my way of showing myself I can actually run that pace. When I first started to get serious about running breaking an 8 min mile was a good day. Since then, I've consistently been lowering my pace and am now running a 6:45 or so on the days I go for it. However, Friday I went for it after my bike workout. And I got it and felt great!

That was the moment I knew that I could compete at the levels I want to. Now I just need to bring it all together. What was your moment when you knew you could acheive your goal?
