Why do kids run?

Generally speaking, a person gets to running with a goal in mind. Adults at least. Kids run because its fun - I remember when I was probably 12 or 14 or so and I’d call to my folks that I was going for a run down the trail by our house and that would be it. There would be no build up, no stretching, no thoughts to what I had eaten most recently and how that would affect my performance. I ran simply because it was fun and I enjoyed it. I still enjoy running today, its among the highlights of my day for sure but very rarely is it for the simple joy that is running. As mentioned earlier, I started to run again because I wanted to show my daughter an active side to life and because there was a half marathon that was available to run. Since then, my running goals have expanded and have included completing a marathon in under 4 hours which I accomplished last year at the Edmonton Marathon and most recently have come to include competing in triathlons. One of my favourite expressions, true or not, about triathlons is that you win on the run. And I guess there you have it, that’s my goal to win on the run. What that means to be I don’t actually know at the moment. I definitely do not expect to win a triathlon especially not at this point so what does winning look like to me?

Finishing strong

Enjoying the race

Finishing the swim portion ( I’m sort of dreading the swim but it’s important to challenge yourself )

There’s probably a time component to it as in I’ll be happy if I finish under....

Being able to show my daughter that hard work pays as my mom always says.

Ok, think that’s all for tonight. Today’s workout was a good one: Ran 7 miles in 52:35.

1 mile easy warm up

4 x 0.6 of a mile at 5k pace followed by 0.4 of a mile at a recovery pace

1 x 0.5 of a mile at 5k pace followed by 0.5 of a mile at a recovery pace ( for distance management really )

1 mile easy recovery.

Was a good run, cloudy but not cool and it felt good. Looking at the data from my Garmin afterwards the 5k pace portions were noticeable, need to work on sustaining the effort for the whole portion of the section but not too bad. I’ll take it, after all, one day I won’t be able to do it at all.
