Welcome to Run it Out

Hey! So this is my site. Kinda sweet isn’t it? Ok, it’s a work in progress but it’s coming along. Why does this site exist? Pretty much because I run a lot and I can really tell my wife how awesome that last ten miler was or how I missed my pace goal by this much only so much before her eyes kind of glaze over. And odds are if you’re here on a website about running you know what that look is...and you’re also likely here because reading about running is right up their next to running. Ok, its close at least.

How I got into running, I don’t really remember which is to say that I don’t actually remember the reason except that when I was old enough in elementary school to join the Cross Country Team it was just something that I did. Maybe my older brother had an influence on me in that regard since I think he was on the team as well but I don’t really remember. The thing was once I was on the team, getting excused from a day of class to go to a meet was like having this super huge cool factor and it was sweet. Pretty soon, most of the kids in my grade were also signing up for the cross country team. Next thing I knew just about everyone in the grades above and below me in the school was on the team and we ended up just about sweeping the district meet. Of course, since we won 7 of 8 trophies in the fall in cross country, track and field in the spring became this big thing. I’d done 800m for a couple of years to that point but never the 1500m race but again as soon as I was eligible, I did. And I won. At the school anyway, pretty sure I got smoked at the district events but I do remember having one of those rare near perfect runs at the trials at school ( I ended up lapping almost every other kid in the field and felt perfect afterwards ). Everything clicked.

Then I went to high school and I basically got distracted. I ran cross country there as well but never pushed, never really competed, I was simply there. An also ran. Then running dropped out of my life. I went to school, graduated, muddled around until I found a job and got married. I ran here and there during this time but never with a goal in mind other than some fitness. I wouldn’t even specify the goal at the time as being fitness, it was so muddled and mixed what I sought that it was simply some fitness and something else.

So what changed right? What got me from being this guy who occasionally ran a couple of times a week to a driven runner out there churning up the road (ok Im sure it resembled plodding along at some points) and getting out regularly four or five, sometimes six times a week for progressively longer and longer runs? Basically, in a word - Avalee. My daughter. She’s the reason I got out there. I wanted her to have a definite positive example in her life from her Dad. Of course she has other positive examples in her life, her Mom is a hugely positive example and a definite source of positivity for me and for Ava. But running is my example to her. The day is coming fast (faster than I can believe) when she can come for a run with her Dad but until then, I need to keep running so I can keep up.

Ok, that’s all for now.

RiT
